Summary

This document describes promising practices from six school districts that are actively working to develop the critical components of systemic family engagement and examines the implications of their work for policy development. The paper identifies three core district-level components necessary for systemic family engagement:

  • Fostering districtwide strategies
  • Building school capacity
  • Reaching out to and engaging families

The authors identify five best practices that ensure that family engagement efforts are interconnected and strategic across the various levels of an effective family engagement system:

  • A shared vision of family engagement
  • Purposeful connections to learning
  • Investments in high quality programming and staff
  • Ensure reporting, learning and accountability for family engagement
  • Help districts understand, design, and implement strong evaluation strategies
