Summary

The Web site of the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) provides access to research-based information, resources, research, and professional development to support instruction of English learners (EL). The Center designs and develops a variety of assessment tools, instructional materials, and resources, including short reports that summarize current research or current topics, called Digests. In addition, CAL is part of a 13-state consortium that is developing language and academic assessments to help fulfill the requirements of No Child Left Behind, including standards-based assessments for English language learners. The Center’s products and services include the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) and support for instruction of recent immigrants or newcomers. CAL also conducts research, needs assessments, and program evaluations.
