Resource Title California Preschool Learning Foundations
Summary

This document describes “foundations” (competencies)—knowledge and skills—for 4- and 5-year old children. The term “foundations” is used rather than “standards” to convey that learning in every domain affects young children’s readiness for school. Their purpose of this document is to promote understanding of preschool children’s learning and to guide instructional practice. The foundations are aligned with California’s kindergarten academic content standards, are based on research and evidence, and are enhanced with expert practitioners’ suggestions and examples. The preschool learning foundations address the following domains:

  • Social-emotional development (self, social interactions, relationships)
  • Language and literacy (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
  • English-language development (specifically for English learners: listening, speaking, reading, writing)
  • Mathematics (number sense, algebra and functions, measurement, geometry, mathematical reasoning)

Background information, a glossary and a bibliography are provided for each domain.
